The week begins on Sunday afternoon when the Family Promise van arrives at the host congregation with our guest families. Air mattresses or cots are set up in designated areas, such as classrooms. Each family has their own private space. Dining and socializing take place in common areas.
Guests settle in, relax and meet the volunteers. Guests and volunteers share a family-style meal together. Guests and volunteers help with cleanup.
After dinner, guests may choose to socialize with volunteers, play games, do homework and engage in conversation, or guests may retire to their rooms for some alone time. Parents are responsible for their children.
At 9:00 p.m., guests retire to their rooms for the evening. Two volunteers spend the night at the congregation.
Early In the morning, guests have breakfast and/or make bag lunches. At 7 a.m., the van picks up the guests and takes them to the Day Center. From there, pre-school children often go to daycare, school-age children are transported to their home school, and parents go to their jobs or look for employment and housing.
The van brings everyone back to the host congregation at around 5:30 p.m. and the cycle repeats for the remainder of the week. Weekend pickup times at the hosting congregation are normally at 12:00 p.m.
On Sunday afternoon, after a week at the host congregation, the families move on to the next host congregation . . . and the new hosting week begins.
Once the guests have found employment and accumulated enough savings, they are ready to move into their own housing. Guests leave when they are able to secure housing and maintain it.
The relationship between Family Promise and guest families continues after they regain their independence. Congregations, volunteers and case managers stay in contact with the families, often through mentoring and other programs. Guests even return as volunteers, helping create a true community of hospitality and support.
